I havent started my reflection yet, because i havent finished my video. I should be done with my video within the next couple of days. I will mainly use pathos, so that parents could possibly feel guilty emotionally and would want to stop the problem, which is childhood obesity. The design, color, image, and sounds could all effect my argument if I dont use them right. If the font is a playful font, then my audiance wouldnt take my presentation serious. If my presentation is to colorful, it will appear that that the issue isnt serious either.Alyessa Draytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18170449817594425881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4113764792973094875.post-78268629499293570272012-04-18T12:47:00.001-07:002012-04-18T12:47:08.923-07:00ProcrastinationProcrastination is horrible! In the digital composing environment, i do not think that the current copyright laws work well because its sometimes hard to determine whats copywriting. It should be changed so people can have a clearer understanding of whats copywriting.
Alyessa Draytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18170449817594425881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4113764792973094875.post-32494992410815746182012-04-09T19:56:00.000-07:002012-04-09T19:56:23.631-07:00Childhood obesity videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rCtMKl38r00&feature=relmfu
<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;">Starting when the child is young, teach your children about healthy nutrition and healthy food choices. You can help them do this by ensuring that there are always healthy foods in the house and by guiding their food choices. Parents can also be a good role model by having a good diet, limited television viewing, and doing physical activity. It would also help children get the adequate amount of sleep each night. Also, have as many meals together as possible. Children who eat meals with their families are more likely to eat healthier meals.
Alyessa Draytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18170449817594425881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4113764792973094875.post-70548021033376177102012-04-02T21:29:00.000-07:002012-04-02T21:29:06.810-07:00Are parents the blame?

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;">There are many things that cause childhood obesity, but there are also many ways for it to be prevented and controlled as well. Childhood obesity is an unhealthy issue that needs to end. This horrible epidemic can end if the parents be more involved in their children life regarding their health. If parents pay closer attention to what kind of food and how much their children intake, and limit their children television and video game time, I have no doubt that the rate of childhood obesity would decrease. I’m not saying that parents are the blame for the problem, but they could be a huge help to try to end this epidemic. Our generation is told to be the unhealthiest generation yet. If parents start a good diet and exercise pattern for children when they’re younger, it will most likely carry on with them into their teenage years and they will less likely become an obese adult. With healthier children, we will develop a healthier generation and longer lives.
Alyessa Draytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18170449817594425881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4113764792973094875.post-58537702132412586242012-04-02T21:28:00.002-07:002012-04-02T21:28:14.227-07:00childhood obesity

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 200%;">There is a health crisis that is spreading throughout the United States, children at younger ages than ever before are gaining weight more rapidly. The cause of childhood obesity has been studied by researchers for many years. “Obesity” is a term that’s loaded with emotion and carries the potential for discrimination. During the past half century America’s food choices, eating habits, and activity levels have become seriously imbalanced.
Alyessa Draytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18170449817594425881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4113764792973094875.post-29109115399984867762012-03-26T17:41:00.000-07:002012-03-26T17:41:53.976-07:00Obesity related to schools

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">The cause of childhood obesity has been studied by researchers for many years. Schools have frequently been identified as a key factor in childhood obesity research. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">In this study, the relationships between childhood obesity and family, school, and community factors are examined. Considering all the multidimensional perspectives surrounding a child's life, they explored the effects on body mass index (BMI) as a measure of childhood obesity. Childhood obesity and overweight is most appropriately an age-and gender-specific determination not always captured by BMI. Regardless of household socioeconomic status, children attending public schools have higher BMI than those attending private schools. Eligibility for free or reduced-cost lunch or breakfast programs at public schools is positively correlated with children's BMI. Also, children attending public schools are more likely to be overweight. In lower socioeconomic status households, school type does not have a significant effect on the probability of being overweight.
Alyessa Draytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18170449817594425881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4113764792973094875.post-30428852569449924652012-03-26T17:38:00.002-07:002012-03-26T17:38:50.152-07:00Fast food related to childhood obesity

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Children have the highest levels of fast-food consumption. This includes higher household income levels, boy’s older children, blacks and children living in the South. The lowest levels were found in children living in the West, rural areas, Hispanics and those that are aged 4 to 8. Fast-food lovers consumed more fats, sugars and carbohydrates and fewer fruits and non-starchy vegetables than children who didn't eat fast food. Fast food contributes to increased calorie intake and obesity risk in children. The study also found that they also consumed 187 more daily calories, which likely adds up to about six pounds more per year. The results are based on children questioned in government surveys from 1994 to 1996 and 1998. Even though this study was taken so long ago, children's current levels of fast-food consumption probably are even higher because of an increase in the number of fast-food restaurants and in fast-food marketing since the late 1990s. The nation's obesity epidemic has focused attention on fast-restaurants, and many want to blame McDonald's Corp. for making people fat and tried to sue them, many fast-food chains have begun offering healthier food. Since fast food is such a big contributer in obesity, policy-makers are taking action to protect children from the fast-food trend, including efforts to limit soft drink and snack food sales in schools, and to curb food advertising aimed at children.
Alyessa Draytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18170449817594425881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4113764792973094875.post-40075056412123383602012-03-26T17:37:00.001-07:002012-03-26T17:37:11.305-07:00Required post, week of 3/27Consider what needs revising (strengthening audience and purpose):
Does this fulfill the purpose of (an annotated bib? a review of lit?) as we have discussed them? Yes

Do you share the research, teaching us why this is important/what it means in terms of your research question, as you go? Yes

Do you integrate quotes and paraphrases carefully, instead of “plopping” them in? Yes

Do you cite carefully (important for this text to function as it should, especially with an academic audience) and in an academic style, including both in-text and work cited/bibliographic citations? Yes

Do you use the sources to build your argument? Do you include a thoughtful statement of purpose and audience for the final project? Yes

Consider what needs editing (strengthening “correctness”):
Do you notice any patterns of error–surface errors (like comma splices, run ons, etc.) that you make repeatedly? Yes; others proof reading me help me make grammer corrections.

What grade would you give your drafts right now? How could you improve upon them? For what i have so far, i would give my draft a B. Whenever i finish it, i believe it would become a higher grade.Alyessa Draytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18170449817594425881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4113764792973094875.post-1789020381828429682012-03-19T11:32:00.001-07:002012-03-19T11:32:04.723-07:00Let's Move!

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Summary:

<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN;">Overweight: A Handbook for Teens and Parents<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%; mso-ansi-language: EN;"> by Tania Heller discuss how physical activity and nutrition, lifestyles of many young Americans has changed tremendously over time. She also talks about how a long time ago, people walked miles to get to school, to visit friends, and to see the doctor. There were also no television to watch, and no internet to keep children from leaving the house and going out to be active. Back then, they also spent their time cooking a fresh home cooked meals and enjoying meals as a family, instead of going to a fast food restaurant and eating precooked meals. The result to the change of how things use to be to now is the rise in obesity. It’s now affecting the younger population more than ever. With the increase in childhood and adolescent obesity comes a host of other illnesses and conditions: diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and cancer, along with low self-esteem, depression and anxiety. Written for both youth and parents, this work covers the causes and effects of the rise in childhood obesity while presenting straightforward guidelines and recommendations for getting assessed and treated. It provides information on healthy nutrition and physical activity for young people, tools for self-monitoring and medical conditions associated with weight gain. Also, throughout the book, there are teens that discuss their weight-related struggles and how they overcame them.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Assessment:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">This is a useful source because it includes real life stories about people that were obese and they provide strategies to overcome it. It also talks about how you can prevent obesity. This source is different from my other sources because this is the only source that has people’s real stories about when they were obese. It also has people telling their stories that are currently obese. They talk about how they feel and what struggles they go through. The goal of this source is to aware parents and teens that technology and fast food has become an issue in today’s world. Also, that we are not as active as we use to be. Therefore, we need to focus more on our health and the substances that we’re putting in our body.

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Reflection:

<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;">Overweight: A Handbook for Teens and Parents<span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; line-height: 115%;"> was a helpful source for my research. It compares how teens live in today’s world to how teens use to live back then. I believe if we lived the life that they use to back in the day, we would have a healthier generation. In today’s world people don’t walk anywhere, because everybody has cars. Therefore, they don’t get that much exercise. Also, since everyone has cars, when they get hungry when they’re out running errands they don’t go home to get a healthy snack. Instead, they stop by a fast food restaurant and get something that’s most likely unhealthy. I can use this source to show that people became less active overtime and that’s one of the main causes of obesity.
Alyessa Draytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18170449817594425881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4113764792973094875.post-23440035990657222952012-03-05T11:04:00.001-08:002012-03-05T11:04:23.379-08:00Out in publicAs i go grocery shopping i see a lot of kids running around the store. There is a health crisis that is spreading throughout the United States. Children at younger ages than ever before are gaining weight more rapidly. Today’s generation is the most obese generation of adults in history. Doctor’s are having visits from young children with harmful grown-up heath concerns from type 2 diabetes to high blood pressure. This book talks about what’s behind the statistics and diagnoses, and suggests what can be done about the major health crisis threatening American children. Sharron Dalton discusses topics like: what obesity is, what causes it, and why it matters. With supportive information from well known and scientific sources, she reviews current diet and exercise recommendations for healthy living, comparing these recommendations with everyday realities experienced by American families. When more than half of the children in today’s environment are overweight or likely to become so, it’s everyone’s problem. Dalton argues in this book that there is a need for a united approach to solve the problem. She promotes the complementary roles of parents, school and community leaders, and health professionals. Dalton makes an outline for everyone that may have a impact on the epidemic by suggesting new ways for parents and other adults to help balance children’s food choices and physical activities. Our Overweight Children is a welcome prescription for treating the problem threatening our children’s health and our nation’s future.

This source is a reliable source because Sharron Dalton is a nutrition professor and she uses scientific evidence. She organized the text in three major divisions. The first describes the problem and its measurement, developing the question of whether or not any child should ever diet. Age-specific body mass index charts for children are included in the book which is extremely helpful to let you know if your child is overweight. Next, the book provides details of factors contributing to weight problems, including authoritarian and permissive parenting styles, fad dieting, and bullying. There are also links to many other useful books and videos are provided throughout the book. Dalton provides her audience guidelines for combating this growing problem at all levels. The topics and the references make this text incredibly useful and comprehensive. Our Overweight Children is an easy to read and clearly written book, and it will serve as resource for teachers, health care workers, parents, students, and social leaders.

It provides me with the information that is related to my topic. It helps me by giving ways to I can help aware the environment to control and stop childhood obesity. It changed my thought about my original topic, that fast food was the blame for childhood obesity which in this case I found out that it’s not the only blame.
Alyessa Draytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18170449817594425881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4113764792973094875.post-76853281969094507542012-02-27T15:48:00.001-08:002012-02-27T15:48:54.219-08:00UNCP's Health CenterI didn't know how useful this schools health center was until recently. When many people feel sad for a couple of hours, they usually say that they are under depression but true clinical depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with everyday life for weeks or longer. The cause of depression is not yet known, although many chemist believes it comes from chemical changes in the brain. It could come from stressful situations or it could even run in your family. But they believe it's both of those causes together. Depression can change or distort the way you see yourself, your life, and those around you. People who have depression usually see everything with a more negative attitude, unable to imagine that any problem or situation can be solved in a positive way. There are ways that you could get tested to see if you actually have a mood disorder or if you're just feeling sad for a temporary moment. There's also treatment for depression. I have family members that suffered from this mood disorder and it can be treated.Alyessa Draytonhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/18170449817594425881noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4113764792973094875.post-59200949331808317902012-02-23T14:42:00.001-08:002012-02-24T19:04:14.296-08:00Research Proposal

<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">A topic that I was interested in is childhood obesity. <span style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt;">Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Childhood obesity is particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start children on the path to health problems that were once confined to adults. Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. An estimated 17 percent of children and adolescents (ages 2-19 years) are obese in the U.S. Obese children are at risk for numerous health problems during their youth and into adulthood. Children who are obese are more likely to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes. Not to mention the psychological toll obesity has on children, which can lead to drug and alcohol abuse, depression, eating disorders and other health issues. Because of these health problems, childhood obesity is responsible for over 300,000 deaths each year. Healthier habits must be established early on. Children who are obese are more likely to become obese as adults. And the health risks continue. Numerous studies have shown that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. But with proper nutrition, exercise and support, children can lose the weight and develop healthy habits for life. <span lang="EN" style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">The dietary and physical activity behaviors of children and adolescents are influenced by many sectors of society, including families, communities, schools, child care settings, medical care providers, faith-based institutions, government agencies, the media, and the food and beverage industries and entertainment industries. Schools play a particularly critical role by establishing a safe and supportive environment with policies and practices that support healthy behaviors. Schools also provide opportunities for students to learn about and practice healthy eating and physical activity behaviors.

<span lang="EN" style="font-family: "Times New Roman", "serif"; font-size: 12pt; mso-ansi-language: EN; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">There are a lot of overweight children in Robeson County, especially at the Boys and Girls Club where I work at. I would like to come up with ways to avoid childhood obesity so that children could live a healthier and better life. A research question that I would consider to research would be, “Are fast food restaurants the blame for childhood obesity?” At a young age, children are exposed to a lot of fast food restaurants and they become sort of addicted to it. Most young children do not know that McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s and all these other fast food restaurants are bad for their health, and they most likely do not know that it affects their appearance. That’s where a parent would be involved in this research topic, because the parents are the ones that buy the food for the children. The food at fast food restaurants have so much fatty substances in them, and there’s a lot of food that is sold there that we don’t even know what it’s composed of! Also, parents are fooled by the fast food ads that they show. The food may look healthy but in reality, it could possibly be the most fatting and unhealthy thing at the restaurant. This is a research question that I believe would be very beneficial to parents and children.

I havent always wondered what type of sugars and fats that were going in my body. It wasnt until recently i started to wonder. I've always been on of those people that would eat anything they want and wouldnt think twice about it. Then one day i started paying attention to the Nutrition Facts thats on items i eat. I cant lie, I couldnt believe how my unhealthy things i was consuming on a daily basis.
