Why am i so fat?

This video was very touching. I felt the little kids emotions and I think this is a very good video that concerns childhood obesity.

My reflection

My required blog post for this week was to start my reflection. I havent started my reflection yet, because i havent finished my video. I should be done with my video within the next couple of days. So therefore, once im done with my video i will start my reflection.

Pathos

In my video i will use pathos, ethos, and logos. I will mainly use pathos, so that parents could possibly feel guilty emotionally and would want to stop the problem, which is childhood obesity. The design, color, image, and sounds could all effect my argument if I dont use them right. If the font is a playful font, then my audiance wouldnt take my presentation serious. If my presentation is to colorful, it will appear that that the issue isnt serious either.

Procrastination

Procrastination is horrible! I've been procrastinating making this video and i know i still have time but i feel like i don't. So therefore, i plan on working on this video everyday until i get it how i want it. After trying to use the movie maker i found out that its going to be harder than i thought!

Required blog post for 4/12

This video is directed to parents to address childhood obesity. Im inspired by this video because it is exactly how i want my video to be like. It sets a sad mood and makes you want to fix the problem.

My video progression..

So far for my English 1060 project, im making good progress. I havent started making the actual video just yet but Im going to start this week. My biggest problem so far is trying to figure out what music i am going to use. I've gotten all my pictures and i have a clear picture in my head of how i want my video to look. I hope it comes out exactly how i want it!

Porfolio 3 so far..

I'm really excited about making this video for my English 1060 class. I think it will be fun, and I'm a creative person so i think i will do well on it. I got almost all my sources i want to use for my video. I just got to pick the music and do other small things.

Copywriting- required blog post.

In the past, i have used something from the internet in an unethical way. In the digital composing environment, i do not think that the current copyright laws work well because its sometimes hard to determine whats copywriting. Sometimes even when we cite the source, they might still say it was copywrited. It should be changed so people can have a clearer understanding of whats copywriting.

Childhood obesity video

What can parents do to prevent childhood obesity?

Starting when the child is young, teach your children about healthy nutrition and healthy food choices. You can help them do this by ensuring that there are always healthy foods in the house and by guiding their food choices. Parents can also be a good role model by having a good diet, limited television viewing, and doing physical activity. It would also help children get the adequate amount of sleep each night. Also, have as many meals together as possible. Children who eat meals with their families are more likely to eat healthier meals.

Are parents the blame?

There are many things that cause childhood obesity, but there are also many ways for it to be prevented and controlled as well. Childhood obesity is an unhealthy issue that needs to end. This horrible epidemic can end if the parents be more involved in their children life regarding their health. If parents pay closer attention to what kind of food and how much their children intake, and limit their children television and video game time, I have no doubt that the rate of childhood obesity would decrease. I’m not saying that parents are the blame for the problem, but they could be a huge help to try to end this epidemic. Our generation is told to be the unhealthiest generation yet. If parents start a good diet and exercise pattern for children when they’re younger, it will most likely carry on with them into their teenage years and they will less likely become an obese adult. With healthier children, we will develop a healthier generation and longer lives.

childhood obesity

There is a health crisis that is spreading throughout the United States, children at younger ages than ever before are gaining weight more rapidly. The cause of childhood obesity has been studied by researchers for many years. “Obesity” is a term that’s loaded with emotion and carries the potential for discrimination. During the past half century America’s food choices, eating habits, and activity levels have become seriously imbalanced.

Obesity related to schools

The cause of childhood obesity has been studied by researchers for many years. Schools have frequently been identified as a key factor in childhood obesity research. In this study, the relationships between childhood obesity and family, school, and community factors are examined. Considering all the multidimensional perspectives surrounding a child's life, they explored the effects on body mass index (BMI) as a measure of childhood obesity. Childhood obesity and overweight is most appropriately an age-and gender-specific determination not always captured by BMI. Regardless of household socioeconomic status, children attending public schools have higher BMI than those attending private schools. Eligibility for free or reduced-cost lunch or breakfast programs at public schools is positively correlated with children's BMI. Also, children attending public schools are more likely to be overweight. In lower socioeconomic status households, school type does not have a significant effect on the probability of being overweight.

Fast food related to childhood obesity

Children have the highest levels of fast-food consumption. This includes higher household income levels, boy’s older children, blacks and children living in the South. The lowest levels were found in children living in the West, rural areas, Hispanics and those that are aged 4 to 8. Fast-food lovers consumed more fats, sugars and carbohydrates and fewer fruits and non-starchy vegetables than children who didn't eat fast food. Fast food contributes to increased calorie intake and obesity risk in children. The study also found that they also consumed 187 more daily calories, which likely adds up to about six pounds more per year. The results are based on children questioned in government surveys from 1994 to 1996 and 1998. Even though this study was taken so long ago, children's current levels of fast-food consumption probably are even higher because of an increase in the number of fast-food restaurants and in fast-food marketing since the late 1990s. The nation's obesity epidemic has focused attention on fast-restaurants, and many want to blame McDonald's Corp. for making people fat and tried to sue them, many fast-food chains have begun offering healthier food. Since fast food is such a big contributer in obesity, policy-makers are taking action to protect children from the fast-food trend, including efforts to limit soft drink and snack food sales in schools, and to curb food advertising aimed at children.

Required post, week of 3/27

Consider what needs revising (strengthening audience and purpose):
Does this fulfill the purpose of  (an annotated bib? a review of lit?) as we have discussed them? Yes

Do you share the research, teaching us why this is important/what it means in terms of your research question, as you go? Yes

Do you integrate quotes and paraphrases carefully, instead of “plopping” them in? Yes

Do you cite carefully (important for this text to function as it should, especially with an academic audience) and in an academic style, including both in-text and work cited/bibliographic citations? Yes

Do you use the sources to build your argument? Do you include a thoughtful statement of purpose and audience for the final project? Yes

Consider what needs editing (strengthening “correctness”):
Do you notice any patterns of error–surface errors (like comma splices, run ons, etc.) that you make repeatedly? Yes; others proof reading me help me make grammer corrections.

What grade would you give your drafts right now? How could you improve upon them? For what i have so far, i would give my draft a B. Whenever i finish it, i believe it would become a higher grade.

Let's Move!

First lady, Michelle Obama, established an international program launched on February 9, 2010 called Let’s Move! The First Lady launched the Let’s Move! campaign at the White House where she was joined by members of the President’s cabinet, including Agriculture Secretary Vilsack, HHS Secretary Sebelius, Education Secretary Duncan, HUD Secretary Donovan, Labor Secretary Solis, and Interior Secretary Salazar, Surgeon General Regina Benjamin, Members of Congress, mayors from across the nation and leaders from the media, medical, sports, entertainment, and business communities who impact the health of children and want to be part of the solution.Let’s Move is collaborative, community-oriented, and comprehensive and will include strategies to address the issues that lead to childhood obesity.  It collaborates among the leaders in government, medicine and science, business, education, athletics, community organizations and more. The goal of this program is to solve the problem of obesity within a generation so that children born today will grow into a healthier lifestyle and will be able to achieve their dreams. Let’s Move! wants to put children on a path to a healthy future while they are still young. It provides parents with helpful information and environments that support healthy choices. The Task Force focuses on five main things, which are: creating a healthy start for children, empowering parents and care givers, providing healthy meals in school, improving access to healthy, affordable food, and increasing physical activity.

Breast Feeding

While doing my research on my project, I've found out that if you breast feed your child they're less likely to become obese. Breastfeeding is extremely beneficial for an infants health. I believe more mothers should consider breast feeding so they can raise a healthy child.

Overweight: A Handbook for Teens and Parents

Heller, Tania. Overweight: A Handbook for Teens and Parents. Jefferson, N.C: McFarland & Co, 2005. Print.
Summary:
Overweight: A Handbook for Teens and Parents by Tania Heller discuss how physical activity and nutrition, lifestyles of many young Americans has changed tremendously over time. She also talks about how a long time ago, people walked miles to get to school, to visit friends, and to see the doctor. There were also no television to watch, and no internet to keep children from leaving the house and going out to be active. Back then, they also spent their time cooking a fresh home cooked meals and enjoying meals as a family, instead of going to a fast food restaurant and eating precooked meals. The result to the change of how things use to be to now is the rise in obesity. It’s now affecting the younger population more than ever. With the increase in childhood and adolescent obesity comes a host of other illnesses and conditions: diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and cancer, along with low self-esteem, depression and anxiety. Written for both youth and parents, this work covers the causes and effects of the rise in childhood obesity while presenting straightforward guidelines and recommendations for getting assessed and treated. It provides information on healthy nutrition and physical activity for young people, tools for self-monitoring and medical conditions associated with weight gain. Also, throughout the book, there are teens that discuss their weight-related struggles and how they overcame them.
Assessment:
This is a useful source because it includes real life stories about people that were obese and they provide strategies to overcome it. It also talks about how you can prevent obesity. This source is different from my other sources because this is the only source that has people’s real stories about when they were obese. It also has people telling their stories that are currently obese. They talk about how they feel and what struggles they go through. The goal of this source is to aware parents and teens that technology and fast food has become an issue in today’s world. Also, that we are not as active as we use to be. Therefore, we need to focus more on our health and the substances that we’re putting in our body.
Reflection:
Overweight: A Handbook for Teens and Parents was a helpful source for my research. It compares how teens live in today’s world to how teens use to live back then. I believe if we lived the life that they use to back in the day, we would have a healthier generation. In today’s world people don’t walk anywhere, because everybody has cars. Therefore, they don’t get that much exercise. Also, since everyone has cars, when they get hungry when they’re out running errands they don’t go home to get a healthy snack. Instead, they stop by a fast food restaurant and get something that’s most likely unhealthy. I can use this source to show that people became less active overtime and that’s one of the main causes of obesity.

Out in public

As i go grocery shopping i see a lot of kids running around the store. Most of the kids i see in there are overweight and what makes it worst is that when i look at their parent cart, their carts are filled with junk food. So i do think parents are a huge blame for this childhood obesity epidemic.

This Research Project

At first I thought this project was going to be alot of work. Then i realized that its not going to be that hared because the topic is something that i like to talk about. So far this project hasnt been too stressful and i been able to get some great resources regarding my research topic.

Our Overweight Children bibliography

Dalton, Sharron. Our Overweight Children: What Parents, Schools, and Communities Can Do to Control the Fatness Epidemic. Berkeley: University of California Press, 2004. Print.
There is a health crisis that is spreading throughout the United States. Children at younger ages than ever before are gaining weight more rapidly.  Today’s generation is the most obese generation of adults in history. Doctor’s are having visits from young children with harmful grown-up heath concerns from type 2 diabetes to high blood pressure. This book talks about what’s behind the statistics and diagnoses, and suggests what can be done about the major health crisis threatening American children. Sharron Dalton discusses topics like: what obesity is, what causes it, and why it matters. With supportive information from well known and scientific sources, she reviews current diet and exercise recommendations for healthy living, comparing these recommendations with everyday realities experienced by American families. When more than half of the children in today’s environment are overweight or likely to become so, it’s everyone’s problem. Dalton argues in this book that there is a need for a united approach to solve the problem. She promotes the complementary roles of parents, school and community leaders, and health professionals. Dalton makes an outline for everyone that may have a impact on the epidemic by suggesting new ways for parents and other adults to help balance children’s food choices and physical activities. Our Overweight Children is a welcome prescription for treating the problem threatening our children’s health and our nation’s future.
This book is focused on children and their special needs with regard to the prevention and management of obesity. This source is a reliable source because Sharron Dalton is a nutrition professor and she uses scientific evidence. She organized the text in three major divisions. The first describes the problem and its measurement, developing the question of whether or not any child should ever diet. Age-specific body mass index charts for children are included in the book which is extremely helpful to let you know if your child is overweight. Next, the book provides details of factors contributing to weight problems, including authoritarian and permissive parenting styles, fad dieting, and bullying. There are also links to many other useful books and videos are provided throughout the book. Dalton provides her audience guidelines for combating this growing problem at all levels. The topics and the references make this text incredibly useful and comprehensive. Our Overweight Children is an easy to read and clearly written book, and it will serve as resource for teachers, health care workers, parents, students, and social leaders.
The information in Our Overweight Children by Sharron Dalton is extremely useful for my research project. It provides me with the information that is related to my topic. It helps me by giving ways to I can help aware the environment to control and stop childhood obesity. This source helps me shape my argument by saying that everyone has a role and can be the blame for childhood obesity. It changed my thought about my original topic, that fast food was the blame for childhood obesity which in this case I found out that it’s  not the only blame.

UNCP's Health Center

I didn't know how useful this schools health center was until recently. Since I've got this cold they have been providing me with medicine and all the other supplies to get rid of it. The health center is also useful for other things, such as information about your health, check ups, and vaccinations. And the best part is IT'S ALL FREE!! Your financial aid covers everything. So if your ever feeling down, stop by the health center. You might as well since you already paid for it.

Depression

Depression is a mood disorder that makes you feel sad, and makes you want to be isolated from the world basically. When many people feel sad for a couple of hours, they usually say that they are under depression but true clinical depression is a mood disorder in which feelings of sadness, loss, anger, or frustration interfere with everyday life for weeks or longer. The cause of depression is not yet known, although many chemist believes it comes from chemical changes in the brain. It could come from stressful situations or it could even run in your family. But they believe it's both of those causes together. Depression can change or distort the way you see yourself, your life, and those around you. People who have depression usually see everything with a more negative attitude, unable to imagine that any problem or situation can be solved in a positive way. There are ways that you could get tested to see if you actually have a mood disorder or if you're just feeling sad for a temporary moment. There's also treatment for depression. I have family members that suffered from this mood disorder and it can be treated.

Research Proposal

“Are fast food restaurants the blame for childhood obesity?”

A topic that I was interested in is childhood obesity. Childhood obesity is a serious medical condition that affects children and adolescents. It occurs when a child is well above the normal weight for his or her age and height. Childhood obesity is particularly troubling because the extra pounds often start children on the path to health problems that were once confined to adults. Childhood obesity has more than tripled in the past 30 years. An estimated 17 percent of children and adolescents (ages 2-19 years) are obese in the U.S. Obese children are at risk for numerous health problems during their youth and into adulthood. Children who are obese are more likely to have high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and Type 2 diabetes. Not to mention the psychological toll obesity has on children, which can lead to drug and alcohol abuse, depression, eating disorders and other health issues. Because of these health problems, childhood obesity is responsible for over 300,000 deaths each year. Healthier habits must be established early on. Children who are obese are more likely to become obese as adults. And the health risks continue. Numerous studies have shown that a child who is obese between the ages of 10 and 13 has an 80 percent chance of becoming an obese adult. But with proper nutrition, exercise and support, children can lose the weight and develop healthy habits for life. The dietary and physical activity behaviors of children and adolescents are influenced by many sectors of society, including families, communities, schools, child care settings, medical care providers, faith-based institutions, government agencies, the media, and the food and beverage industries and entertainment industries. Schools play a particularly critical role by establishing a safe and supportive environment with policies and practices that support healthy behaviors. Schools also provide opportunities for students to learn about and practice healthy eating and physical activity behaviors.
There are a lot of overweight children in Robeson County, especially at the Boys and Girls Club where I work at. I would like to come up with ways to avoid childhood obesity so that children could live a healthier and better life. A research question that I would consider to research would be, “Are fast food restaurants the blame for childhood obesity?” At a young age, children are exposed to a lot of fast food restaurants and they become sort of addicted to it. Most young children do not know that McDonalds, Burger King, Wendy’s and all these other fast food restaurants are bad for their health, and they most likely do not know that it affects their appearance. That’s where a parent would be involved in this research topic, because the parents are the ones that buy the food for the children. The food at fast food restaurants have so much fatty substances in them, and there’s a lot of food that is sold there that we don’t even know what it’s composed of! Also, parents are fooled by the fast food ads that they show. The food may look healthy but in reality, it could possibly be the most fatting and unhealthy thing at the restaurant. This is a research question that I believe would be very beneficial to parents and children.

Whats going in your body?..

.. wouldnt you want to know.

I havent always wondered what type of sugars and fats that were going in my body. It wasnt until recently i started to wonder. I've always been on of those people that would eat anything they want and wouldnt think twice about it. Then one day i started paying attention to the Nutrition Facts thats on items i eat. I cant lie, I couldnt believe how my unhealthy things i was consuming on a daily basis. Ever since then, i started reading the labels on things and making sure they contain healthy thing that will benefit my body, not harm it.

Stuffy Nose? Fix it.

So as you know its "winter", although it doesn't seem like it. This has to be the hottest winter ever. The weather goes from 50 degrees one day to 90 the  next. A lot of people are enjoying this weather, but in reality they need to realize its a bad thing in so many ways. One of the ways its a bad thing is it effects our health. It causes us to get colds and other sicknesses. That being said, if you end up catching a cold you will need get better and you can find some helpful tips here to help you become your healthy self again.

Become more active!

I think that if people developed more hobbies that people's health wouldn't be so bad. It would also keep them from focusing on smoking, drugs, and all these other bad things that ruining their health. Just simply joining a sports team or going on a walk can improve your health. If you just sit at home all day and eat, you're just hurting yourself. Later on in life you're going to regret it and wished that you were more active. So begin while you're young and BECOME MORE ACTIVE! You will not regret it in the future.

My reflection on ENG1060 so far..

So far in English 1060, we've read articles and watched documentaries about health issues. These articles and documentaries helped me on my portfolio. I learned that there are many ways you can research topics and information (via web, blogs, books, articles, etc.) I worked on my reading skills by taking time out of the day and reading the articles Dr.Dundee gives us to read,  but I need to work on focusing what its actually talking about. I tend to read things but don't pay attention for the meaning of why its been written. I worked on my writing skills by having other people read over my work and correcting me. I also worked on my research skills by researching about community health for my blogs and interview in various places. I learned that community health and wellness was not as healthy/well as I thought it was. Our health system could use a lot more improvement. If I could do this project over again, I would've asked many more questions. After listening to my interview I thought of a lot more questions I could have asked. If I would've asked more questions it could have gave the interviewee more opportunities to express her thoughts about the county's health.

Obesity

Obesity has become a huge problem in the US, especially within children. Lately, I've been seeing a lot of over weight little kids. Who is to blame for this issue? Most likely the parents. Parents should take watch what types of food their children intake and make sure they have a healthy diet. The environment we live in could also be the blame for this. As you ride around town, there's always multiple fast food restaurants on the side of the road. When people are out handling their business or just to lazy to cook, they tend to just eat the closest thing they see which is a fast food restaurant. We should have more healthier places we could stop at to eat. I believe if we did have healthier fast food places, obesity wouldn't be a huge issue as it is now.

My Lunch

I know I said that after watching that McDonald's video that I wasn't going to eat there anymore, but this afternoon I ate some McDonald's. All I could think about while eating my mcnuggets meal was that my food wasn't gonna digest. I'm going to probably think about that video every time I eat at Mickey D's. But, I also started to wonder if its just McDonald's that has food like that. What about Burger King, Wendy's, or even Taco Bell. I remember when there was a rumor going around about Taco Bell using fake meat, but that was a long time ago. So that McDonald's video made me want to do more research on these other fast food restaurants.

Oral history on Food

Food: From Source to Salespoint (C821), is a National Life Stories project, and it charts the revolutionary changes which have occurred within Britain's food industry in the course of the twentieth century. The interviews explore the technological and social changes which have affected the production, distribution and retailing of food, as well as documenting the history of Britain through our attitudes to food.

What is McDonalds food REALLY made of?! Hmmm.

After watching the McDonald's video on our class blog, it made me start thinking, "what is their food really made of?" The lady had a 3 year old hamburger and fries from McDonald's and it didn't spoil or anything, which is abnormal. It looked just like it would look as if it was just recently purchased. Watching that video changed my whole outlook on McDonald's food because something doesn't seem right.

Robeson County Health Rankings

Robeson County is poorly ranked. It is 98 out of all the Couts in North Carolina. A thing that shocked me was the sexually transmitted disease ranking. The Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) rate is measured as chlamydia incidence per 100,000 population. Chlamydia is often caused by unsafe sex. Chlamydia is the most common bacterial STI in North America and is one of the major causes of tubal infertility, ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, and chronic pelvic pain. STIs in general are associated with a significantly increased risk of morbidity and mortality, including increased risk of cervical cancer, involuntary infertility, and premature death. However, increases in reported chlamydia infections may reflect the expansion of chlamydia screening, use of increasingly sensitive diagnostic tests, an increased emphasis on case reporting from providers and laboratories, improvements in the information systems for reporting, as well as true increases in disease.

You can click here for more information about Robeson County Health ranking.

Community Health

Community health is characterized in four main categories which are social, physical, economic, an service environment. It highlights how community based organizations and leaders are changing policy to improve health. The factors can have protective or negative effects on health. A community environment with many protective factors is a healthier community. They influence individual behaviors, encouraging prevention and better management of disease, creating a healthier population. The factors impact various constituencies and community residents differently, depending on geography, size, composition, and the culture of a community.

You may notice that there aren't that many health options here in Robeson County such as hospitals and health clinics. Its very different from where I'm from, which is Cumberland County, where there's health service/ an Urgent Care on every street you turn on. If Robeson County had more options to receive health care, it would probably be a more healthier and safer community.

Unethical Studies!

The Tuskegee and Guatemala syphilis studies are unethical! For the Tuskegee studies, "The United States Public Health Service, in trying to learn more about syphilis and justify treatment programs for blacks, withheld adequate treatment from a group of poor black men who had the disease, causing needless pain and suffering for the men and their loved ones." This was unethical because the group of men that were untreated didn't agree to be left untreated. For some reason, the government chose to not provide treatment for a group of poor black men which was unfair. Im assuming that they didn't provide treatment because of the fact that they were poor, and possibly because they were African American. For the Guatemala study their subjects were prison inmates, soldiers, and mental patients. They were infected with the disease by spinal injections or by sleeping with an infected prostitute. What this study proved was that syphilis could be treated by taking a medicine called penicillin.

These studies were unethical because the participants to this study did not agree to participate. They violated their rights and put their families and the participant through tough times and heartache. Both of these studies are similar but the Guatemala study recieved treatment. In my opinion, the Tuskegee syphilis study patients were in more need of the treatment instead of prisioners or people that were infected by sleeping with an infected prostitute.

Robeson County Health Department

The county that my interviewee stays in is Robeson County. He informed me that their was a health department in Robeson County that i wasnt aware of. Its located on 460 Country Club Rd, Lumberton NC. Its open Monday - Friday and is closed on weekends. Their service includes animal control, child health, dental health, and much more. Robeson County Health Department is where almost everyone in Robeson County go to get medical help.

SOPA and PIPA

In class on Wednesday, January 18, 2012, we were talking about SOPA and PIPA.

Wednesday morning before we went to class I noticed that google and wikipedia were blacked out/ had a censor bar over the name of the website. I was wondering what was going on so I clicked on the google icon and it took me to a site where it was talking about SOPA and PIPA. The site was explaining how they're trying to band a lot of things from the Internet. In a way, this would be going against our first amendment which is our right to have freedom of speech. A lot of people are against SOPA and PIPA, including me, and are voting for them not to do what they are planning to do. In my opinion, the Internet wouldn't be the same anymore if all these sites that we go to EVERYDAY are block or restricted on what can published on it. Soo, basically I'm against SOPA and PIPA.

“We are conducting a study of health and wellness in Robeson, Scotland, and Hoke counties. What do you already know about these issues in our area? What did you learn from the readings/videos we’ve engaged with so far? What questions do you have about community health and wellness in our area?”

Health issues that i know of and have been told about that is very common in this area are diabetes and high blood pressure. I've learned that sometimes even the area that you live in can affect your health and determine how long you live.

A questions I have about community health and wellness in our area is: how can we make our environment a healtier?
